Belgian regulator (BIPT) consults on draft regulation on router freedom – VTKE issues statement
The Belgian regulatory body BIPT recently published and consulted on a draft decision regarding the definition of the network termination point (Link). By specifying the network termination point at the “connection socket to the line”, the draft decision would allow Belgian users free choice of terminal equipment for all broadband technologies (fiber, cable and DSL).
In its statement, the VTKE welcomed the BIPT’s draft decision to locate the network termination point at the “connection socket to the line” and thus creating the opportunity for end-users to use a terminal device that meets their needs directly on their broadband connection. Accordingly, the VTKE would like to encourage the BIPT to adopt the present draft decision in this form as soon as possible.
The VTKE believes that a network termination point at the “connection socket to the line” and the associated freedom of choice of terminal equipment will contribute to more competition and thus innovation in the market for telecommunications terminal equipment. In addition, the possibility of free choice of terminal device also clearly corresponds to the wishes and needs of many Belgian users.
Like the BIPT, the VTKE is of the opinion that there are no technical reasons that stand in the way of the freedom of choice of terminal equipment. This is also supported by the success of corresponding regulations in other countries.
