Belgian regulator (BIPT) decides to introduce “router freedom” for all broadband technologies
With a decision of 26 September 2023, the Belgian regulatory authority BIPT will enable consumers in Belgium to freely choose the terminal device at their broadband connection. This is based on a definition/location of the network termination point at the “connection socket to the fibre, copper or coaxial line” and thus applies to all access technologies (fibre, DSL and cable).
According to BIPT, the adopted regulatory requirements would enable customers to change network operators more easily or to consciously choose a more durable device or a device with more functions (e.g. in terms of security or WiFi options). It would also encourage innovation and competition in the market for terminal equipment.
The new regulations on the free choice of terminal for consumers are to apply from 1 November 2024.
